Dander

Postby holliegirl » Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:39 am

Our Hollie is doing great, and I know the dander issue should start to clear up the longer we have her, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to "speed it along" a bit? I know you can add oil to her diet etc, but I don't know really what kind, how much etc. We have been feeding her ProPlan large dog breed dry food and I've been adding V-8 to it (LOVES it!!!) but would really like to supplement her so her dander gets better.

Greyhounds like people get really dry skin in the winter. They don't have the oil in their skin like other breeds b/c that would hold in heat. A lab wants oily skin/coats so they repel water. But this downside is dry skin. It will get better in the summer, but I highly recommend putting fish oil in the food. All other oils will cause diarrhea. I buy fish oil from costco but kroger or CVS carries it too. Just the stuff you would take for heart health. And one capsule a day is good, but 2 a day will be a good jump start. Don't break it open..your house will smell horrible! i haven't had any trouble with mine or my fosters just eating it in their bowl with their dinner/breakfast. Just throw it in there whole.
It will help..but it won't completely irradicate it this time of year.
Hope this helps!!!!

Ditto on the fish oil pills. After a month or so their coats and dander started showing improvements, and now they are nice and soft and have very little dander. They still get some in the winter, but it's a world of difference from when we first got ours.

I also echo the fish oil pill's, we actually have all six of our dogs on it and they are doing well. The hounds have very little to no dander and I'm sure what they do have is from the dry air of the time of year.
